Surprise! The Alternate August Birthstone: Red Spinel
Happy Birthday August Babies! Surprise! If you’re not keen on the chartreuse green of peridot, you have another option! One of my favorites, red spinel became an August birthstone through a modern recognition of its historical significance and its vibrant beauty. Traditionally, peridot was the sole birthstone for August, but as the popularity and appreciation for gemstones evolved, red spinel was added to the list by the American Gem Trade Association (AGTA) and Jewelers of America in 2016. This inclusion acknowledges the gemstone’s rich history, often mistaken for ruby in royal jewels and treasures, and its excellent qualities such as durability and brilliance. By adding red spinel, gem enthusiasts and those born in August gained an additional, stunning option that carries both historical prestige and aesthetic allure.
Formation and Origins
Red spinel, one of the birthstones for August, is a fascinating and historically significant gemstone. Spinel is a magnesium aluminum oxide that forms in cubic crystals and can be found in a variety of colors, including the prized red variety. This gemstone forms in metamorphic rocks and is often found in the same deposits as corundum, the mineral family that includes sapphires and rubies.
Spinel is formed under conditions of high temperature and pressure, typically within marble or dolomite. It can also be found in alluvial deposits, where it has been transported from its original location by natural forces. The most famous sources of red spinel are in Myanmar (Burma), particularly from the Mogok region, known for producing some of the finest and most vivid red spinels. Other significant sources include Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Vietnam, and Tajikistan.
Characteristics
Red spinel is renowned for its vibrant and intense red color, often compared to the color of the best rubies. This intense hue is due to the presence of chromium, the same element that gives rubies their red color. Spinel has a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale, making it a durable gemstone suitable for various types of jewelry.
One of the notable characteristics of spinel is its excellent clarity and brilliance. Unlike many gemstones, spinel is often found with very few inclusions, which allows for exceptional light performance. Spinel has a vitreous luster and is highly transparent. Its cubic crystal structure means that it does not exhibit pleochroism, meaning it shows the same color intensity from all angles.
History
The history of red spinel is as colorful as the gemstone itself. For centuries, red spinel was often mistaken for ruby due to their similar appearance. Some of the most famous "rubies" in history have turned out to be spinels. For instance, the Black Prince’s Ruby, a 170-carat red spinel set in the British Imperial State Crown, was believed to be a ruby until it was correctly identified as spinel.
In ancient times, spinel was mined in Southeast Asia and used in the royal jewels of many cultures. It was especially favored by the Mogul emperors of India, who adorned their crowns and ceremonial swords with large red spinels. Spinel was also prized by the Romans, who believed it had protective properties.
Meaning and Symbolism
Red spinel is associated with various meanings and symbolic attributes. It is considered a stone of revitalization, bringing energy and joy to its wearer. Red spinel is believed to inspire passion, devotion, and longevity in relationships, making it a popular choice for engagement rings and romantic gifts.
Red spinel is thought to aid in physical and emotional healing, as well as, promoting a sense of stability and grounding. This gemstone is also believed to enhance vitality, confidence, and leadership qualities, helping individuals to achieve their goals and overcome challenges.
Red spinel, with its captivating red color and rich history, is a gemstone that has been treasured for centuries. As an August birthstone, it offers those born in this month a symbol of passion, protection, and vitality. Also, for those of you that have not been excited about your August birthstone, you can now embrace the alternative of the stunning hue of red spinel!
